Country sub-division: Departments We don't use abbreviations for our equivalent to States, which we call Departments. Some are not Departments due to their population so they receive the name of Comisarias or Intendencias, though this fallen into disuse. Here they are : AMAZONAS ANTIOQUIA ARAUCA ATLANTICO BOLIVAR BOYACA CALDAS CAQUETA CASANARE CAUCA CESAR CHOCO CORDOBA CUNDINAMARCA GUAINIA GUAJIRA GUAVIARE HUILA MAGDALENA META NARI¥O NORTE DE SANTANDER PUTUMAYO QUINDIO RISARALDA SAN ANDRES Y PROVIDENCIA (Islands) SANTANDER SUCRE TOLIMA VALLE DEL CAUCA VAUPES VICHADA There are two special Disctricts which in reality are two cities : Santaf de Bogot D.C. (Capitla District) Cartagena D.T. (Touristic Disctrict) Country Telephone Format: Only big cities do have a common format. (?) 999-9999 Where the ? is the prefix. It can range from one digit to 6 or 7 digits. Besides, we do use two or three digit prefixes for the phone company that gives the service. Two digit for domestic and three for international. Small towns do have phone numbers that range from 4 to 7 digits. Usually towns near big cities use 7 digits, but this might not be true for all of them. International Phone Code: 00 57 National ID Number: Country Postal Code Format: I've been unable to find accurate info on postal codes. To my knowledge if they exist at all, they are not commonly used. Country Currency Format: Inside the country : $999,999.99 Outside the country or in International money transactions : $999,999.99 COL This is the official use, however due to devaluation most common transactions and receipts do not include cents. Our curency is called PESO. Though the unit is one PESO, the minimum amount you find in coin is 50 PESOS. Repeated digit separator is a comma every three digits. Currency symbol is a $ ISO Currency code is COL ADDRESSES Though teorethically all cities do have numeric addresses, some cities do not use it. Basically, we do have two types of streets which are : "Calle" and "Carrera". Calles go in East - West line and Carreras in North- South line. This are (or suppossed to be) perpendicular one to each other. When they are not, they are called "Diagonal" and "Transversal" accordingly. Addresses are supposed to be writen in the following way: If the place it on a "Calle" then the address will be : Calle xxx (Cardinal Point) No. yy-zz (Cardinal Point) Where xxx equals the "Calle" number, yy equals the "Carrera" number and zz equals the relative position in metters from the corner between both streets to the place form the Carrera, The use of the cardinal point depends entirely on the city you live in. For example we do not use it at Bogot for addresses on West - North sides of the city, but it is imperative for East - South, but in other cites it might be the contrary. Here : North = Norte South = Sur East = Este West = Oeste For example : Calle 50 Sur No. 24-55 Means the place is located 55 meters from the cross of Calle 50 Sur with Carrera 24. The distance in metters is in this case measured from the Carrera. šIn which direction does it advance? Well, it depends. It grows as it gets farther from the central point, 0,0. Sometimes streets get the same number due to its location. In this cases the street number is added a letter. For example : Calle 55 Calle 55 A These streets are just a block away. I rare cases both streets got exactly the same number because they were located in very intrincate ways, so one of them receives the "Bis" name. Eg : Calle 55 A Calle 55 A Bis These streest are usually very close one to each other. You put the extra data after the address, eg. Block or apartement number.
